NSW 5 Stand State Selection Shoot - 1st Shoot

SSAA Griffith Branch held a successful 1st round of the NSW 5-Stand State Selection Shoots on October 26th & 27th.  Two very different ranges were set, amongst the pine trees presenting a good variety of KNOWN targets to challenge all shooting grades.  Warm weather and little breeze attracted 40 competitors from Bathurst, Canberra, Hay, Wodonga, Temora, and surrounding Griffith area.

The 100 target event commenced on Saturday afternoon with two rounds of 5-Stand, with the remaining 50 targets shot on Sunday morning. SSAA Griffith Branch decided to shoot known targets to encourage new competitors to the sport which proved successful; this also allowed the range setters to provide equalling challenging targets for all grades.

Shoot administration was run smoothly with Brian Weeding at the helm. The shoot was generously sponsored by Casella Wines, and the Griffith Branch with merchandise for all lucky place getters.

Local Griffith member Greg Allen demonstrated some excellent shooting over the weekend with a score of 88/100 winning him the High Gun Prize. Other winners were:

AA Grade: Brett Inch (Temora) 84, Grant Barton (Bathurst) 83, Darren Macartney (Hay) 83

A Grade: Peter Jacka (Hay) 79, Mitchell McDonell (West Wyalong) 75, Anthony Mancini (Griffith) 73

B Grade:  Romain Devaud (Hay) 64, Jacob Foster (Griffith) 61, Claude Beltrame (Griffith) 28

C Grade: Karl Russell (Griffith) 68, Aaron Fitzpatrick (Griffith) 67, Michael Rombolo (Griffith) 47

It was decided at the State and National AGM to adopt the new percentage scoring system so that all competitors receive a percentage score of the High Gun total regardless of number of targets shot. To be eligible for 2014 NSW Team Selection you must attend 3 Selection Shoots and the NSW State Titles.

3rd 5 Stand State Selection Shoot at SSAA Hay

SSAA (Hay) Branch Inc. hosted the 3rd round of the SSAA NSW 5-Stand State Selection Shoots on the weekend of the
2nd & 3rd February and this was hotly contested by 45 shooters.  Shooters travelled from Melbourne, Canberra, Shepparton, Nathalia, Bathurst, Tocumwal, Avenel, Deniliquin, Kyabram, Griffith, Temora and of course, the local shooters.

Two very different ranges were set up with the first layout using the newly erected 50ft tower, which delivered some very challenging targets. Due to the windy conditions there was a good variety of crossing and incoming targets to complete the course.  This course was set up by Peter Jacka and Simon Gee.  The second layout was a much lower course with a good selection of targets, especially the slippery rabbit and battue. The wind also affected these targets even though they were set more in the timber.  The rabbit prevented a couple of the shooters from scoring a perfect 25 round on this layout.  This range was set up by Darren Macartney.

Grant Barton from Bathurst was the only shooter to score a perfect 25 round on Sunday, with three other shooters scoring 24.

The canteen was run by Sara who was kept busy with hungry shooters.  The club also put a two course BBQ dinner on Saturday evening which was a huge success with a large crowd enjoying the good food prepared by the ladies.

The administration was run by Jan who kept everything running smoothly as well as working out the points at the end of the weekend for those who were eligible.  There was generous sponsorship from ELEY Cartridges and merchandise from SSAA Hay Branch.

The junior shooters Zac Murphy and Sebastian Zanotto were assisted by Darren, Grant & Simon who showed their excellent coaching skills to get some amazing shots from both of the boys. Well done!

At the end of the weekend there were two shoot offs.  Grant Barton and Nick Guerra shot off for High Gun with Nick shooting his way to victory. The other shoot off was between Flavio Zanotto and Mark Langham for 1st & 2nd in B Grade with Mark being the winner.
